Heather Smith Grattan is an associate with Avery Kill, LLC. Heather has practiced family law exclusively since she was admitted to practice and has experience in all aspects of such matters including, but not limited to, property characterization, valuation and division, allocation of parental responsibilities, premarital agreements, maintenance, child support, parentage cases and post-decree litigation.
Heather earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois College of Law, from which she graduated magna cum laude. Prior thereto, Heather graduated cum laude and with high distinction from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association, Chicago Bar Association, Lake County Bar Association and Women’s Bar Association of Illinois.
While in law school, Heather served as a Senior Law Student in the University of Illinois College of Law Civil Litigation Clinic, where she received the CALI “Excellence for the Future Award” in Spring 2013. In addition, Heather served as an Associate Editor of The Elder Law Journal and was a judicial extern to the Honorable Grace Dickler, the former Presiding Judge of the Domestic Violence Division in the Circuit Court of Cook County.
Prior to joining Avery | Kill, LLC, Heather worked at two other prominent family law firms—first, as a summer associate/law clerk and, then, as an associate attorney—for almost seven (7) years.
Heather is also actively involved in the community and has served as, among other things, committee members for The Lilac Tree and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Chicago Wine Opener.
